postChristian: What's Left? Can We Fix It? Do We Care? with Christian Piatt

Progressive Christian author Christian Piatt will be discussing his new book postChristian: What's Left? Can We Fix It? Do We Care? The influence of Christianity is changing dramatically in the western world. We are an increasingly “post-Christian,” culture, in that Christianity no longer is the dominant value system at the center of our cultural identity. How did we get here, and what can we do about it? Should the institutional church be saved? Does the world really need the church? Christian Piatt walks through his “Seven Scandals of Christianity” and “Seven Christ-Like Virtues” in an attempt to help people stop being more Christian and start being more Christ-like.

Diwali: Festival of Lights

Popularly known as the "festival of lights,” Diwali is an official holiday in India, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Myanmar, Mauritius, Guyana, Trinidad & Tobago, Suriname, Malaysia, Singapore, and Fiji. For Hindus, Diwali is one of the most important festivals of the year and is celebrated in families by performing traditional activities together in their homes. The name "Diwali" or "Divali" is a contraction of "Deepavali", which translates into "row of lamps". Diwali involves the lighting of small clay lamps filled with oil to signify the triumph of good over evil.

The scholar is Richard H. Lowery, Ph.D. Yale. Dr. Lowery is a masterful story-teller and lecturer, using humor and keen insight to help us get into Genesis in fresh and provocative ways. He is currently working on a new book, Genesis and Human Rights, and his lectures will help us focus on social justice and human rights themes through key stories in Genesis.

The Formation of the Bible: A Major Debate Among Scholars” by Lee Martin McDonald, BA., B.D., Th.M., Ph.D.
Griset Lecture

7 p.m.
Wallace All Faiths Chapel

This lecture will focus on some of the most important issues related to the formation of the Bible, including many debatable topics such as definitions of Scripture and canon, and the relevant ancient artifacts such as catalogues of sacred scriptures, the content and text of ancient manuscripts. These and other issues are at the heart of the multiple variations in modern translations highlight the historical, theological, and sociological contexts of the formation of the Bible. This lecture will also clarify issues that regularly divide biblical scholars and raise questions among people of faith about the books included in the Bible and why some many more books were excluded. Such topics necessarily involve investigations of relevant ancient documents, when the processes of the formation was complete, and what significance this has for biblical faith (both Jewish and Christian). There will, of course, be an opportunity to interact with Dr. McDonald following his presentation.

Stolen by the Nazis: Recovering “The Woman in Gold” and Other Paintings
 7 p.m.
Wallace All Faiths Chapel

Portrayed by Ryan Reynolds in the film Woman in Gold, E. Randol Schoenberg is the indefatigable attorney who waged an eight-year battle on behalf of Maria Altmann in her quest to regain six paintings by Gustav Klimt that had once belonged to her family but were taken by the Nazis. In a landmark decision by the United States Supreme Court, Schoenberg won the right for his client to sue the government of Austria for the return of the paintings. Subsequently, as a result of a unanimous decision by an Austrian arbitration court, the six paintings, valued at over $325 million, were returned to Altmann and other family members. The portrait of Altmann’s aunt, Adele Bloch-Bauer I, now occupies a place of honor in the Neue Galerie museum in New York City. The grandson of renowned Austrian composers, Arnold Schoenberg and Eric Zeisl, Schoenberg graduated from Princeton University with a Bachelor of Arts in Mathematics. He received his J.D. degree from the University of Southern California. In 2007, Mr. Schoenberg received the California Lawyer Attorney of the Year award for outstanding achievement in the field of litigation. He is the recipient of awards and honors from many organizations, including The 1939 Society, the American Jewish Congress, and the Anti-Defamation League. He serves as president of the Los Angeles Museum of the Holocaust.

Muslim Superheroes: Ms. Marvel and Pluralism in Comics Today by Prof. David McConeghy

"Comic books are often denigrated as childish, but the recent updates to Ms. Marvel and other major superheroes shows the medium's sophisticated thoughts about American pluralism. Despite recent negative representations of Muslims in comics that became intensely politicized after the Danish Cartoon Controversy and Charlie Hebdo attacks in Europe, here in the U.S. Islam is being written into the fabric of our increasingly diverse pantheon of superheroes. The popularity of a teen-aged, Pakistani-American Ms. Marvel hints at the power being leveraged by today's comic creators as they explore the dynamic and evolving landscape of American religious identity."

Marjorie Perloff Lecture - The Vienna Paradox: Jewish Identity and Austrian High Culture Between the World Wars

7 - 8:30 p.m.

Wallace All Faiths Chapel

Marjorie Perloff was born Gabriele Mintz into a cultured and largely assimilated Jewish family in Vienna. Her maternal grandfather, Richard Schűller, was the Austrian delegate to the League of Nations after World War I and Minister for Trade in the successive governments between the wars. In the immediate aftermath of the Anschluss, Gabriele, then six years old, her parents, and older brother escaped from Vienna to Switzerland and later that year emigrated to the United States. She describes her transition from the German-speaking Gabriele to the English-speaking Margie, in her memoir The Vienna Paradox. Marjorie Perloff graduated magna cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa from Barnard College and earned a Ph.D. from Catholic University. A prolific and interdisciplinary, indeed often groundbreaking, scholar, Dr. Perloff has written more than a dozen books, including works on the poets W.B. Yeats, Robert Lowell, and Frank O’Hara, and on post-modern literature and art, including The Poetics of Indeterminacy and The Futurist Moment: Avant-Garde, Avant-Guerre and the Language of Rupture. Her book Differentials: Poetry, Poetics, Pedagogy, published in 2004, received the Robert Penn Warren Prize in 2005. Dr. Perloff has served as President of the Modern Language Association and the American Comparative Literature Association and is an elected Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and the American Philosophical Society. Dr. Perloff received an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree from Chapman University in May 2015. Her book Edge of Irony: Austro-Modernism in the Shadow of Empire will be published in spring 2016 by the University of Chicago Press.

Has Science Made God Obsolete?: The Great Debate

7:30 - 9 p.m.

Chapman Auditorium, Memorial Hall

You’re invited to a special evening with Dr. Keith Ward vs. Dr. Michael Shermer, “Has Science Made God Obsolete?: The Great Debate” – moderated by Dr. Daniele Struppa, Chancellor and President-Designate Chapman University on Monday, March 7, 2016, 7:30-9 p.m. in Memorial Hall Auditorium.
In this great debate over one of the most profound questions of our time, theologian and priest Dr. Keith Ward and scientist and skeptic Dr. Michael Shermer challenge each other on the nature of reality, science and religion, and God’s existence. Can science really explain the origin of the universe, life, consciousness, and morality without recourse to God? Or does science in fact provide enough evidence to make belief in God rational? Don’t miss this epic event with one of the world’s leading theists and one of the world’s leading atheists.

This debate is co-sponsored by the Griset Lectureship in Christian Ethics; the Department of Religious Studies in Wilkinson Colleges of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences; the Fish Interfaith Center, and the Office of the Chancellor at Chapman University and is free and open to the public.

College students today are more burdened by demands than ever - grades, work, teams, clubs, friends, and family, not to mention preparing for life after graduation. It's no wonder students report feeling more stress, anxiety and depression both on and off campus. But, what if you could change that? Chapman faculty Jay Kumar & Gail Stearns share how an alternative way is not only possible, but achievable. Revealing practical tools and powerful insights from their "Happiness" course, this engaging lecture aims to help students build greater resiliency and resourcefulness to face life's challenges. Integrating current research from brain science with the timeless spiritual teachings and mindfulness meditation, discover how it's possible to enjoy calm and centeredness in mind, body and spirit for optimal health and happiness.

Meditation brings us to that center ready to connect, explore and create.

We invite you to enter your inner space through meditations that relax and energize us. Then celebrate this inaugural week and conference with the Fish Interfaith Center and the whole Chapman Community.

Etty: A One Woman Play by Susan Stein
7:30 p.m.

Wallace All Faiths Chapel

Adapted and Performed by
Susan Stein

Directed by
Austin Pendleton

Etty Hillesum’s life ended at Auschwitz when she was only 29 years old. In the play Etty, drawn entirely from Etty’s diaries and letters of 1941- 1943, we meet a remarkable young Dutch woman: insightful, determined, poetic, sensual. Through the voice of Susan Stein, Etty speaks directly to her audience, frankly, and with compassion--even for the enemy. Seeking the meaning of her life--and all life--during the terror of Nazi occupation, Etty “happens upon” prayer, discovers a reality that she calls God, and opens herself to the power of being fully alive and present, bearing witness to the catastrophe unfolding around her. In her gentle yet forthright way, Etty asks us not to leave her at Auschwitz, but to let her have a “little bit of a say” in what she hopes will be a new world.

Susan Stein is an actress, playwright and teaching artist living in
New York City. Stein studied acting in the graduate program at New York University Tisch School of the Arts. She adapted Etty using only Hillesum’s words. She has performed the play in theaters, universities, and museums throughout the United States.

Austin Pendleton is an American film, television, and stage actor,
a playwright and theater director. He is an ensemble member of the Steppenwolf Theater Company.

Geometric Aljamía Workshop

This workshop accompanies the exhibition Geometric Aljamía currently on view in the Henley Galleria, 2nd Floor, Argyros Forum. Artists Reni Gower and Jorge Benitez of Virginia Commonwealth University will lead students in an exploration of sacred geometry transferred into art. Participants will create designs using geometry, personal and heritage imagery, which they will then cut out in Tyvek. This hand drawn/hand cut process requires creativity and focus.  In direct contrast to our fragmented culture, this quietening of the mind will underscore the benefits of slow work wrought by hand.

Participants (maximum 10 for each workshop) may choose EITHER:

  • Monday November 7, 9-11.50 a.m., Fish Interfaith Center
  • Tuesday November 8, 1-3:50 p.m., 404 Beckman Hall

The class is free, but requires registration. Please RSVP to Esther Shin at artcollections@chapman.edu. For questions, please call (714) 628-2832.
