Opportunities for Academic Service - Learning Capstone Course
- Legacy Pioneers is a startup founded in 2017. The team came from a background of wealth management and are dedicated to nurture the growth and advise the next generation of the high net worth families when they attend university abroad.At Legacy Pioneers, CU students of Chinese can integrate an experience in education and advising, as an uBuddy Ambassador, as well as in marketing, creating materials for promotion. - Global Cargo Connection is a Taiwanese owned business founded in 2003. It is an all functional logistics company which provides global transportation all over the world. The company has service contracts with ocean liners and air cargo carriers, and they serve many fortune 500 companies. At Global Cargo Connection, CU students of Chinese can integrate an experience in logistics, import and export service and administration. President: Mr. Lee (clee@globalcargoconnection.com).
- A Little Dynasty Chinese School was founded in 2010. A Little Dynasty Chinese School is a new kind of Chinese school which is specifically designed to make learning Chinese fun and make learning Chinese accessible to children from non-Chinese speaking families. At A Little Dynasty Chinese School, CU students of Chinese can integrate an experience in education, as teacher assistants and school aides. Director: Angie Liu (angie@alittledynasty.com).
- PYC is a Taiwanese owned business. It was founded in 2006 by a small group of real estate and mortgage professionals.PYC is a full service company consisting of three departments, residential mortgage, residential real estate, and commercial real estate. At PYC CU students of Chinese can integrate an experience in real estate. President: Paul Yang (brokerpaulyang@hotmail.com).

- FACE Foundation of LA: “FACE Foundation is an American nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to supporting French-American relations through innovative cultural and educational projects. In partnership with the Cultural Services of the French Embassy in the United States, FACE Foundation promotes artistic, literary and educational exchange and collaboration between creative professionals from both countries.”
- Alliance Francaise de Los Angeles (Santa Monica): The Alliance Française of Los Angeles is part of a global network that dates from 1883, when the Alliance Française de Paris was created. Today, there are over 900 Alliances Française chapters working in 130 countries across the globe. We all share a common mission of promoting the French language and Francophone cultures, in order to foster positive relations between Francophones and Francophiles of all ethnicities and nationalities. Currently, there are over 100 Chapters in the USA and Puerto Rico. The Alliance Française of Los Angeles is represented by its General Delegation at the French embassy in Washington, D.C., and is a member of the Federation of Alliances Françaises USA
- The French American Cultural Society (San Francisco): The French American Cultural Society’s mission is to promote, develop and support French American cultural and educational projects.

- The Wende Museum, Culver City: “The Wende is an art museum, historical archive of the Cold War, and center for creative community engagement that explores and inspires change.”
- Internship program: They have many artifacts from Germany. One exhibit is “German Democratic Plastics in Design.” home to more than 100,000 East German objects
Italian Track
Opportunities for Academic Service - Learning Capstone Course
- Fondazione Italia is a nonprofit organization founded in 1998 for the purpose of promoting the teaching of the Italian language and culture across Southern California. The organization, that works closely with Consulate General of Italy in Los Angeles, offers courses in Italian language for all ages all year long on the Chapman University campus on Saturday mornings. At Fondazione Italia, CU students can integrate an experience in education, as teacher assistants, as well as in marketing, creating strategies and materials for promotional. Director: Hilary Stern (hstern@fondazione-italia.org).
- The Bowers Museum, founded in 1936 by the City of Santa Ana through a bequest from Charles and Ada Bowers, is one of California's finest and Orange County's largest museums. The Bowers occasionally organizes exhibits connected to Italian art, which allow for CU students of Italian to integrate an experience in museum education and administration. Director of Education: Emily Mahon (EMahon@bowers.org).
- The Italian American Museum of Los Angeles, or IAMLA, presents the Southern California Italian American experience with an emphasis on Los Angeles, a story that is inextricably linked to the region itself and represents a unique chapter of the Italian American Diaspora. Its mission is to foster a deeper understanding of Southern California’s diverse heritage through research, historic preservation, exhibitions and educational programs that examine the history and continuing contributions of Italian Americans in multi-ethnic Los Angeles and the United States. IAMLA offers internships in Museum Education, Special Events and Marketing, and Research, for more details see. Executive Director: Marianna Gatto (marianna@italianhall.org).
- Higher Ground is a nonprofit organization dedicated to mentoring at-risk youth (7-14 years old) in Anaheim by providing a safe haven for the community where all may feel welcome to play, learn, and grow in body, mind, and spirit. Currently at Higher Ground, over 100 college students from four local universities engage Higher Ground youth in sports, the arts, taekwondo, video production, photography and cooking. CU students can integrate an experience in education, leading after-school foreign language and culture activities with this youth. Executive Director: Joe Baldo(joebaldo@highergroundoc.org).
- Project Access is a nonprofit organization that serves housing communities with low-income families, children and seniors by providing opportunities to become healthier, further educated and financially stable. At Project Access, CU students can integrate an experience in education, leading afterschool foreign language and culture activities. Japanese Track
Opportunities for Academic Service - Learning Capstone Course
- AOI College of Languages was founded in 2000 as an English institute for non-native English-speaking students. AOI teaches English from a conversational level all the way to idiomatic fluency. Their emphasis is on creating a student-centered, supportive classroom environment.
- The Japanese Consulate General in Los Angeles was founded in 1915. The office monitors and researches political matters in its jurisdiction, the political relationship between the United States and Japan, and the political and economic relations of the Japanese American community. The Consulate General also raises cultural awareness of Japan through events and informing the public of Japanese current events.
- Japanese Association for Language Teaching (JALT), founded in 1977, is a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting foreign language teachers in Japan. JALT organizes opportunities for its foreign language instructor members to meet and collaborate. JALT also produces several publications including The Language Teacher, a bimonthly publication with articles discussing language teaching in Japan.
- Ibaraki Christian University was founded in 1967 in Hitachi, Ibaraki, Japan. Its departments include Biblical Studies, English Language and Literature, and Elementary Education. IU seeks to provide its primarily secular student population with a well-rounded education rooted in the principles of Christian faith. IU had an international focus since its origins as a mission school; today, IU works to send their students on exchange to English-speaking countries in addition to welcoming native English-speaking students to their campus.
- Coca-Cola Japan was founded in 1957 in Shibuya, Tokyo. The Shibuya branch oversees the manufacturing and sale of all its soft drinks produced in Coca-Cola’s 22 factories nationwide. It also manages product development and marketing strategies by researching trends in the Japanese market and analyzing consumer behavior.
- Sanrio Company, Ltd. was founded in Tokyo in 1960 that designs, licenses, and produces products like stationery in the theme of Japanese kawaii culture. Their reach extends beyond gift products into the movie production, publishing, and food industry. It is one of the most successful marketing brands in the world.
- Bandai Co, Ltd. was founded in 1950. Bandai is a Japanese toy producer with an American brand headquarters in El Segundo. They plan, develop, and manage the sales of toys like character goods, portable electronics, and video games.
- Tokyo Journal International: “The Tokyo Journal, which celebrates its 40th year in April, 2020, is one of the oldest English magazines sold in domestic and international bookstores. It is a quintessential user's manual providing a unique and insightful perspective of Japan. Produced by and for a knowledgeable and worldly international community, the quarterly Tokyo Journal speaks to an educated and literate audience curious about the country and the way it works.” Handshake writing internships: link
- Japanese American National Museum of LA: Volunteer page
- Japan Foundation Los Angeles: “The Japan Foundation, Los Angeles (JFLA) promotes international awareness and mutual understanding between Japan and the U.S. through cultural exchange. We administer a wide range of programs and grants aimed at introducing Japanese arts and culture, supporting Japanese Studies and language education, and promoting publications, translations related to Japan.” Volunteer page
- Japan America Society of SoCal: “The Japan America Society of Southern California was founded on February 21, 1909, to build economic, cultural, governmental, and personal relationships between the people of Japan and America.” Volunteer page
- Japanese American Cultural & Community Center in Little Tokyo, LA. “The Japanese American Cultural & Community Center weaves Japanese and Japanese American arts and culture into the fabric of our communities… Through inclusive programs and authentic experiences, we continue our traditions and nurture the next generation of innovative artists, culture-bearers, and thinkers.”
Spanish Track
Opportunities for Academic Service - Learning Capstone Course
- Higher Ground Youth and Family Services
Higher Ground Youth and Family Services is a nonprofit organization dedicated to mentoring at-risk youth in Anaheim and Santa Ana (ages 7-14). With after school and summer programs, Higher Ground creates an environment that promotes positive education, strong interpersonal skills, and empowerment. We work with other entities to create a support system for those at-risk of gang induction and other possible pitfalls. Higher Ground provides a safe haven for the community where all may feel welcome to play, learn, and grow in body, mind, and spirit. Currently at HG, over 100 college students from four local universities engage HG youth in sports, arts, video production, culinary arts, photography, music, and more. CU Spanish language students can integrate an educational experience at HG by developing and leading language and/or culture programs with the youth. They may also work with families or administration to develop community programs and/or infrastructure that serves the needs of local Spanish speaking families served at HG. - Youth Centers of Orange
The Youth Centers of Orange seeks to create a better tomorrow by providing mentoring, community engagement opportunities, enriching activities, and leadership and life skills development for the youth of today. By connecting youth with positive role models and opportunities to develop their character and follow their dreams YCO can build the future leaders that will continue the legacy of the City of Orange. CU Spanish language students can integrate an educational experience at HG by developing and leading language and/or culture programs with the youth. They may also work with families or administration to develop community programs and/or infrastructure that serves the needs of local Spanish speaking families that are served at YCO. - Chrysalis
Chrysalis is a nonprofit organization dedicated to creating a pathway to self-sufficiency for homeless and low-income individuals by providing the resources and support needed to find and retain employment. The Chrysalis philosophy is that a steady job is the single most important step in a person’s transition out of poverty and onto a pathway to long-term self-sufficiency. Chrysalis’ core employment services are designed to support clients during every phase of their self-directed job search. Language students would support staff with Spanish speaking clients and engage in interpretation and translation. WYS is advancing awareness, cultivating success and strengthening communities through integrated mental health services for children, youth and families. WYS collaborates with families, school personnel and other care providers to develop goals and strategies tailored to their needs. Although WYS treats each client individually, families can expect to receive a standard of care. Volunteers assist the Agency by providing interpretation and translation (written and oral) for clients, families, clinicians, psychiatrists and the administrative staff. The primary role of the interpreter is to participate as a neutral party in the role as a conduit of information that flows between the clinic staff and the client and their family member(s)/caretaker. Volunteers must maintain and support a culture of compliance, ethics, integrity and have a sound understanding of and commitment to the WYS mission and philosophy.
