Biography
Andrew Matschiner joined the Attallah College of Educational Studies as an Assistant Professor in 2024. He received his Ph.D. in Education from the University of California San Diego in 2023. He holds an M.Ed. and a School Administration and Supervision certificate from Johns Hopkins University. He previously worked as a Visiting Assistant Professor in Educational Leadership at Miami University (Ohio).
Prior to joining the Attallah College faculty, Dr. Matschiner worked as a high school math teacher and an instructional coach. As a teacher, he worked to make Algebra 1 culturally relevant by using algebra concerts to engage and develop students’ critical consciousness. As an instructional coach, he supported secondary math and science teachers to develop culturally relevant unit and lesson plans.
Dr. Matschiner is passionate about leadership for equity, racial equity in education, organizational improvement, and the sociopolitical contexts of education. Using qualitative methods and a transdisciplinary approach, he draws on education, sociology, and management scholarship to examine issues of racial equity in P–12 education. Currently, he is working on a project analyzing P–12 district “equity director” roles, including role design and support.
His work has been published in journals including the Review of Educational Research, the American Educational Research Journal, Urban Education, and Whiteness and Education. His work on educators’ professional learning addressing race and racism has been featured in USA Today.
