Biography
Martin Nakell’s writing cuts across genres, from fiction and poetry to prose poetry. His books include The Myth of Creation (1993), The Library of Thomas Rivka (1997), Two Fields that Face and Mirror Each Other (2001), Form (2005), and Settlement (2007). Awards include an NEA Interarts Grant and the Gertrude Stein Award in Poetry
for 1996-1997; he was also a finalist in the New American Poetry Series for 1999.
He teaches creative writing courses at Chapman, but is known as well for his courses
on James Joyce and twentieth-century poetry. He leads an annual summer course to Italy.
Nakell received a BA from Cal State Northridge, an MA from San Francisco State University,
and a DA (Doctor of Arts) from SUNY Albany.
