»Interprofessional Education

At Chapman University, multidisciplinary education involves students from various professions learning together. However, Interprofessional Education (IPE) goes a step further by intentionally having students learn from, with, and about each other. This approach helps them appreciate different professional roles and perspectives.

The Interprofessional Education Collaborative (IPEC) identifies four core competencies essential for effective interprofessional practice:
  • Values and Ethics
  • Roles and Responsibilities
  • Communication
  • Teams and Teamwork
These competencies are crucial in fostering an environment where students can excel in shared decision-making, joint accountability for patient care, and population health.

IPE at Chapman University enables students from different disciplines to learn together, fostering an understanding of each other’s roles and enhancing collaboration to optimize patient outcomes. By integrating the IPEC core competencies into their education, students are better prepared to work in interprofessional teams, ultimately leading to improved healthcare delivery and patient outcomes.

Shaping Future Pharmacists through Interprofessional Education and Experiential Learning

Through 3 500-level course series, a co-curricular element, and IPE elements in didactic coursework, students come into contact with IPE elements on a routine basis. While some aspects of IPE are outside of typical learning environments, many are integrated into XYZ. Learn more about the simulations and experiential IPE curriculum with this story.

Chapman University has a unique model of infiltrating IPE

IPE is not a "side piece", but part of the learning outcomes of becoming a collaborative practice-ready pharmacist.

Evaluation

We are evaluating students and improving quality based on this feedback. As an accredited institution, our creative and academic freedoms allow us to address the 4 competencies.

This evaluation is taken before, and then at the end, of their 500 IPE course series, as well as towards the end of their rotations before graduation.
