»Limited Submission

Some federal agencies and private foundations limit the number of applications that may be submitted from one institution within a specified period of time. In order to increase the chances of Chapman University’s success in applying for these "Limited Submission" opportunities, a procedure exists to select the most meritorious proposal(s) when multiple Chapman PIs demonstrate interest in the same limited submission opportunity.

This procedure is called an "internal competition," and particular rules apply. An internal competition adds a significant step to proposal preparation; therefore, to allow adequate time for selection and to enable PIs to complete the final application, internal deadlines for limited submission opportunities are set well in advance of official sponsor deadlines.

  • The Office of Research will post limited competition announcements online. Faculty and staff who are interested in the funding opportunity should submit a brief project description to the Office of Research at sps@chapman.edu by the internal deadline. When the number of proposals exceeds the sponsor’s limit, an internal ad hoc committee will be created to review and assist in selection of proposals. The review process will also include input from leadership from the representative academic units to help determine which proposal(s) will move forward, based on merit and strategic priorities. If interest does not exceed the sponsor’s limit, no internal competition will be held.

  • 1. Inform the University – Any PI-Eligible Chapman faculty or administrator may apply for a limited submission opportunity. Interested PIs should notify the Office of Research promptly by emailing sps@chapman.edu. If the sponsor’s solicitation does not appear on Chapman’s Limited Submission web page listing, please notify the Office of Research and the opportunity will be added to the website.

    2. Prepare a Brief Proposal – Required components of the brief proposal are clarified in the announcement of the internal competition (below). Please review the agency guidelines to ensure that your project fits the funding opportunity. Prepare a brief proposal that includes the information requested.

    3. Submit the Proposal to the Office of Research – Proposals are to be submitted via email to sps@chapman.edu by the internal competition deadline. The Office of Research will coordinate committee review.

    4. Follow-up – Following the internal competition, PIs will be notified of their status. Selected PI's may receive suggested edits and modifications from the reviewing committee. Top proposals will be expected to be fully complete and ready for submission by the sponsor's deadline.
