What is Monkeypox?

Monkeypox is a rare disease caused by infection with the monkeypox virus. Monkeypox virus is in the same family of viruses as smallpox. Monkeypox symptoms are similar to smallpox symptoms, but milder, and monkeypox is rarely fatal. Over 99% of people who get this form of the disease are likely to survive. What should I do if I suspect I might have monkeypox?

• Isolate from others until you have been assessed by a healthcare professional. Cover any rashes with clothing and wear a mask. Avoid close contact with pets
• Faculty/Staff: Contact your Primary Care Physician’s office
• Students: Contact the Student Health Center to schedule an appointment. If Monkeypox is suspected, a sample of the rash or lesion with be collected and tested by PCR.
• Individuals with Monekypox should isolate until all their rash has resolved, scabs have fallen off, and their skin is fully healed. This may take 2-4 weeks

Preventing Monkeypox: There are several ways to prevent the spread of Monkeypox, including:

• Avoiding close contact, including sex, with people with symptoms like sores or rashes
• Practicing good hand hygiene
• Individuals who become infected with Monkeypox should isolate themselves until their symptoms are improving or have gone away completely. The rash should always be well covered until completely healed
• Avoid contact with infected materials contaminated with the virus
• Avoiding contact with infected animals

Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP)

Recommendation for Routine Vaccination of Persons aged 11 through 18 Years

• ACIP recommends routine vaccination of persons with quadrivalent meningococcal conjugate vaccine at age 11 or 12 years, with a booster dose at age 16 years. After a booster dose of meningococcal conjugate vaccine, antibody titers are higher than after the first dose and are expected to protect adolescents through the period of increased risk through age 21 years. For adolescents who receive the first dose at age 13 through 15 years, a one-time booster dose should be administered, preferably at age 16 through 18 years, before the peak in increased risk. Persons who receive their first dose of meningococcal conjugate vaccine at or after age 16 years do not need a booster dose. Routine vaccination of healthy persons who are not at increased risk for exposure to N. meningitides is not recommended after age 21 years.

Our health care services usually include the following:

• First aid: cuts, abrasions, and burns
• Acute illness: fever, sore throat, urinary tract infections, vomiting and diarrhea
• Health maintenance: immunizations, TB skin testing and tetanus boosters
• Health screening: pregnancy, PAP, STDs, blood pressure and diabetes screening
• Reproductive Health

All students are required to submit a health review and immunization form.

Undergraduate Students
Services are available to all full-time undergraduate students, as well as to any other students who have paid the Student Health Services fee. Services include, but are not limited to, first aid, treatment of acute illnesses, health maintenance and health screening and are provided by physicians, nurses and nurse practitioners in our convenient, on-campus site.

Graduate Students
Please note: You are not automatically enrolled for health services on campus or in the Chapman medical plan. If you choose to use Chapman Health Services, you must request that the Health Services fee be applied to your account and submit a completed Health Record and Immunization forms.

The Chapman Student Health Center is located at the corner of Sycamore and Glassell.
