Key components of job searching and applying
Before beginning your job search, you can set yourself up for success by booking an appointment with Samuel Lee, manager of Fowler’s Career Services.
Additionally, consider the following components that will lead you to professional
success:
Creating a career portfolio
To land an engineering job, you must be able to accurately market yourself and your
skills. We recommend doing this through a detailed portfolio that includes your:
- Short biography: a summary of your education, strengths, and previous recognitions, if any.
- Experience: include your engineering experience from coursework, internships, or volunteering
opportunities.
- Technical skills: highlight your technical skills using your past completed projects.
- Overview of non-technical skills: potential employers are also interested in your non-technical skills. These many
include teamwork, communication, a positive attitude, flexibility, etc.
Make sure toregularly update your portfolio online, especially on LinkedIn, and keep in mind that prospective employers may also request
documentation to support your application.
Interviewing
While interviewing for engineering positions can be intimidating, you can excel with
some planning and practice.
All Chapman students can meet with the Career and Professional Development Office to practice through mock interviews.
Visit the Interviewing Resources page for tips, preparation strategies, and helpful tools available to you as a Chapman
student.
Networking
Throughout your academic career, you'll have many opportunities to network and build
relationships with professionals and faculty, so don’t hesitate to ask questions!
In fact, about 85% of jobs are filled through networking. That means that various opportunities are obtained based on the people we know and
the professionals we connect with. Therefore, we encourage you to maintain a contact list of the industry professionals and expert faculty you come across, as they may be able to assist you in your job search endeavors.
