Personalized Education: Students will construct a research project, collect primary and secondary sources,
and critically evaluate these sources as historical evidence.
Student Writing: Students will demonstrate the ability to properly structure a thesis-driven essay,
apply appropriate methods of citation, and use a clear writing style that conveys
historical knowledge, ideas and evidence in a mature, readily understood manner.
Faculty-Student Research: Students will prepare and revise a research paper which they will present effectively
at a formally organized history conference and submit for a paper prize or publication
in a respected history journal, especially the award-winningVoces Novae: Chapman University Historical Review.
Critical Thinking: Students will learn to recognize historical arguments regarding controversial historical
questions and to formulate and support an original historical argument using primary
and secondary sources.
