»Creative and Cultural Industries Minor: Reshaping Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences

Creative and Cultural Industries (CCI) is one of the most dynamic and fastest growing academic disciplines. The study of CCI at Chapman examines a vast array of cultural and creative activities, covering topics as diverse as media, fashion, tourism, museums, art galleries, publishing, video games, social media, emerging technologies, and visual cultures. This minor explores how such activities influence our understanding and experience of culture, and the wider social, political and economic implications of their development as industries. CCI is also about the nature of creativity: how we use creative practices to solve problems, develop new ideas and innovations, and to challenge and disrupt established ways of thinking. The minor is taught from local, national and global perspectives. Traditional studies of the Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences are being radically reshaped by the research and practices of the Creative and Cultural Industries; as such, CCI can be defined as the new liberal arts for the 21st century.

Hanna Borges ’24
Business Administration Major with emphasis in Marketing / CCI minor. Fashion is Hanna's main area of interest in the Creative and Cultural Industries. She applies the concepts she learns in class—like making sustainable fashion choices—to her own brand, which she launched in 2021.
"When I was exploring minors, I felt like CCI encompassed what I was interested in. Since I grew up always loving fashion and being a creative person, I needed to find a place to channel my artistry. I don’t know what I would’ve done without CCI because I needed a creative space that allowed me to balance out all of my business classes.”

Cassidy Stillwell ‘24
BFA Theatre Performance/CCI minor. Cassidy's interest in the entertainment sector has led her to focus on film as a creative industry.
"With CCI, I've come to realize that I'm not limited to a particular sector and can pursue a career in a variety of fields. The minor opened my eyes to a lot of other opportunities, and as I continued to advance in it, I discovered that I could truly do anything I wanted."

Leah Hallal ’24
Business Administration with a Marketing Emphasis/ CCI minor. Leah Hallal, a student of CCI, has experimented with a wide range of fields including the creation of her own podcast. Due to her major, one of her main interests in the creative fields is advertising.
“CCI has been a game-changer, exposing me to the endless possibilities within various creative and cultural industries beyond the arts and entertainment; I've realized there are countless job positions and industries, from marketing and design to film production and beyond, each offering unique and exciting avenues for exploration and growth.”

How to Declare the Minor

To add CCI as your minor you simply go to the Chapman webpage for academic program changes and click on the link for the Major/Minor form that corresponds to your catalog year. You will need to fill out the top of the form with your information and sign it. At the bottom of the form you will fill out the information for “Minors”. From the drop down menu pick “Cultural and Creative Industries” and then check the box below that best applies to how you are adding the minor (as a first minor, second minor, etc.).

From there you DO NOT need to obtain a signature of the Director/Department Chair of CCI before submitting this form, you can simply send the form for processing to the Office of the Registrar via the following email: APS@chapman.edu .

Though it is not required, when you email this form to the Office of the Registrar, please copy CCI Program Manager Shannon Halverson, shalvers@chapman.edu.

Different Advisors: What each area covers and who you should contact for what

Unit Advising/Program Advising
For advising on CCI specific curriculum requirements you can contact CCI Director Dr. Patrick Fuery, Dr. Kelli Fuery or Program Manager Shannon Halverson. This includes questions about the CCI Minor program structure according to your catalogue year, and/or questions regarding substitutions within the minor. Please be aware though we can advise you on matters of CCI, but you will always want to double check your program evaluation with the Academic Advising Center to make sure that ALL of your credits for both your major(s) and your minor(s) are as you expect them to be.

Academic Advising
The Academic Advising Center Advisors are trained to look over your program evaluation and make sure you are meeting all your credential requirements, and to spot any problems. They, however, will not always know the nuances of every program, and so some dialogue will need to be opened between them and the unit if a question arises. As CCI is a minor, and not a major at the moment, we do not currently have a designated advisor, therefore it is best to check with the Academic Advising Center on their Contact Us page, to see which advisor would best suit your needs before reaching out to them.

Internship Information

As diverse as the Creative and Cultural Industries are, so too are the myriad of internships that our students can apply for. If you are in the beginning phase of your internship search have a look at Wilkinson’s Career Advisor’s page to assist with first steps and Internship listings through Handshake. Also take a moment to check out the opportunity board on our CCI creative site, as we try to post internships and jobs, we think will appeal to our minors there regularly.

You can also reach out to Erin Berthon, Wilkinson College’s Career Manager. Erin can help students to brainstorm internship ideas, or search for internships in an area of interest, she can even assist with prepping to apply for competitive internships.

If you want to register your internship for credit, once you have secured an internship and confirmed an internship advisor you will want to utilize the Career and Professional Development Center. Go to the Career and Professional Development Center’s Internship page for the overview and instructions on how to do this, and to check for pertinent forms and deadlines.  If you have any questions about this part, you can contact the Center Monday - Friday, 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. at 714-997-6942 or email them at career@chapman.edu.

Note that University allows students to receive academic credit for both paid and unpaid internships. Internships are registered through Career and Professional Development, rather than my.chapman.edu. For further information on general internship guidelines check with the Career and Professional Development Center.

If you do not intend to register your internship for credit, you do not have to go through the Career and Professional Development Center. However, the Wilkinson Career Advisor, Erin Berthon, can still help you with searching and applying for the internship. Regardless of whether or not the internship is being taken for credit, please make sure to inform Erin of any completed Internships.

Study Abroad Information for CCI

The process really starts with The Center for Global Education, they will have the information on how to start the study abroad process, and through their global gateway site, you can look at the different programs offered abroad. When in a specific program, you should be able to look up the classes offered. Also you can do a Program Course Equivalency Search, to see if your major/minor already has some classes that have been approved from that university to count as a course equivalent in your major/minor. If you have trouble navigating the Global Education webpage, you can reach out to the Global Education Staff for assistance

Even if the university you are looking at does not have already approved course equivalents, that’s OK. In that case you would just look through the courses that they have and choose some that you think would be good equivalents to possible CCI courses. From there, you would want to make a meeting with CCI Director, Dr. Fuery to discuss this academic plan. There are several ways that the courses can be approved. They can be approved as a direct equivalent for one of the core CCI courses, a direct equivalent for one of the CCI electives, OR as a one time substitution for either a core CCI course or a CCI elective. This will of course depend on what the courses are, where you want them to count in your program evaluation for the minor, and what the actual curriculum is. Please note, that if a study abroad course is approved as a substitution, that will use one of your two substitutions within the CCI minor. Dr. Fuery will be able to help you with determining the best approval type for each course.

The Center for Global Education will also have information on Travel Courses. If CCI is running a travel course in Interterm or Summer, you will be able to see the information for the course listed there, including budget estimates and deadlines for applying.
