»Diversity, Equity and Inclusion

Schmid College believes that the best science happens when diverse individuals are supported, included and empowered to share their voices as a part of scientific discovery.

We value diversity and inclusion in the learning environment and believe it is vital to the fulfillment of the university mission. It is our conviction that an inclusive learning environment facilitates complex, critical and creative thinking and that differences in identities, values, beliefs and perspectives are fundamental to a comprehensive education.

Schmid College DEI Initiatives

Dean Ibba is making it a priority to review existing education, learning, and training programs on racial injustice, implicit bias, and gender inequity. A task force has been created to help with this review and also develop new programs and activities to advance cultural change and growth within the college.

Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Task Force

Dean Ibba established the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) Task Force. Assistant Program Director for Biological Sciences Dr. Kate Hill and Assistant Professor of Mathematics Dr. Joby John are heading the committee comprised of seven faculty members, four undergraduates and two graduate students. These members will serve as advisors to college leadership on DEI initiatives taking place within Schmid College.

DEI Task Force Goals

  • Establish robust protocols to diversify faculty and staff searches.
  • Develop and support an Advocates and Allies program based on the program at Ohio State University, Dean Ibba's previous institution.
  • Manage funds raised for the Schmid College Faculty Fund which are used to support Schmid College DEI Initiatives.
  • Explore ways to leverage resources associated with the Mentor Collective to support mentoring and retention of STEM students.
  • Support the development of a Society for Advancement of Chicanos/Hispanics and Native Americans in Science (SACNAS) student chapter at Chapman University.

Call to Action for Racial Justice in STEM

Goldwater Scholar Edena Khoshaba '21, along with additional Goldwater Scholars have written an open letter and call to action to outline the importance of the STEM community's involvement in addressing systematic racism. Included is a list of resources and suggested anti-racist action items for students, faculty, and staff to consider as Schmid College continues its commitment and action towards racial justice.

Support Schmid College DEI Initiatives

Donations to the Schmid Faculty Fund ultimately give those who work closest with our students the tools to be able to achieve their academic goals, meet Chapman’s mission and advocate for their colleagues’ priorities with student success in mind. This year, the Faculty Fund will support Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion initiatives in Schmid College.
